Mince pies are utterly essential to a British Christmas. The name is a bit misleading – although they contain mincemeat, there’s no actual meat in them, although there used to be, a few hundred years ago. Modern mince pies contain a very rich mixture of fruit, fat and booze, and the pastry for mincemeat is rich and buttery.
